Indonesia's Hindu island, where Nyepi closes the airport for 24 hours.
Bali is the one Hindu-majority province in the world's largest Muslim-majority country, and it keeps a calendar nobody else runs on. For Nyepi, the Balinese new year, the island stops completely — Denpasar airport shuts to everything but medical evacuations, and there is no traffic and no light after dark, for a full 24 hours.
The rest of the year, rice terraces climb the slopes on an irrigation system called subak, run by farmer cooperatives rather than the state and on the UNESCO list since 2012. Above them sits Mount Agung, the volcano whose 2017 eruption closed that same airport for days. Dry season runs from roughly April to October.

Safety tips
Transport
Most travel insurance voids scooter cover unless you hold a motorcycle endorsement on your home licence plus an International Driving Permit. Police checkpoints ask for both, and hospitals ask before they treat.
Health
Tap water is not drinkable anywhere on the island, including for brushing teeth in budget accommodation. Stomach upsets are usually traced to ice and washed salad rather than street food itself.
Cultural-Etiquette
Temples require a sarong and sash, usually lent at the entrance. Do not climb on shrine structures for photographs, and step aside rather than walk through a procession on the road.
